Filmworkers Club Dallas Probes the Colors of Heath Care Facility Provides Post Services for New Harris Methodist Hospitals Campaign (July 06, 2006)

Filmworkers Club Dallas used color to help tell the stories of people overcoming serious health problems in providing post production services for a new campaign for Harris Methodist Hospitals. Colorist Joe Malina helmed the telecine session, using a Spirit Datacine and a Da Vinci 2K Plus color corrector to set a dramatic look for the two spot package out of The Balcom Agency.

In each spot, a person relates a story of a health care crisis and tells how he or she selected Harris Methodist Hospitals for treatment and recovery. One spot focuses on the owner of a bridal shop who describes her battle with cancer. She reveals that while she didn?t ?choose to get cancer,? she was able to choose her health care provider and picked Harris Methodist, ?for the compassion and support.? In the second spot, a restaurant owner discusses his experience as a heart attack victim.

The spots use contrasting visuals to represent the person?s struggle with disease and their recovery. In the cancer spot, a shot of the woman sitting alone in her shop and a close up of her working with straight pins are used to indicate isolation and pain. Scenes of the woman fitting a young client with a wedding dress, suggest the joy of recovery and returning to life.

In color correcting the film footage for the spot, Malina worked with director Tracy Helms and director of photography Jim Zabilla to create color treatments that heighten the contrast in the imagery. ?For the shots representing cancer, we went with a cold, stark look?the later elements representing recovery were richer and more colorful,? Malina explained. ?With the ?cold? material, I keyed off the ivory on the dress and the woman?s skin tone. There was a moment in the session where we knew we had it?that was exciting.?

Although the majority of the spot was shot on 35mm film, a few scenes were captured with a hand-cranked 16mm Bolex camera. ?The Bolex material was very gritty and added extra texture to the spot,? Malina said.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
