Neural Audio, Inc. announced today that its neural algorithm-based 5.1 technology is delivering innovations that will allow digital broadcasters such as CBS Sports to serve consumers with the 5.1 surround sound content they seek.

5.1 for NCAA Final Four HDTV Broadcast
In collaboration with CBS Sports, Neural Audio implemented its 5.1 Sports Event Capture Array (SECA) in 12 HDTV CBS games during the 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, including the Final Four and Championship game in New Orleans. The SECA system, operating with only one array located behind each basket, is the industry's only expert system that can deliver a 5.1 experience to consumers over a stereo backbone merging court action, announcer, and crowd audio in a perfect perceptual window.

5.1 surround sound denotes today's surround-sound configurations. The "5" refers to the five main channels - left front, center front, right front, left surround and right surround - while the "1" refers to the low frequency effects channel or sub-woofer. The source material, such as a DVD-Video disc with a 5.1-channel Dolby AC-3 soundtrack, a DTS-encoded DVD or compact disc or, more recently, a television or satellite channel, provides a 5.1 signal.

"Neural Audio's SECA design was easy to implement and enabled CBS Sports to deliver on-court action in 5.1 to our HDTV audience," says Ken Aagaard, Senior Vice President of Operations. "At CBS Sports, we are always looking for new technologies that deliver to our television audiences a better listening experience and bring them as close to the action as possible. Neural Audio delivers a true expert system for 5.1, which makes the broadcast a more enriching experience."

"Neural Audio is pleased to have had an opportunity to introduce our 5.1 capture array for sports in one of the most important broadcasts of the year," says Robert Reams, CTO and Co-Founder of Neural Audio. "The project highlights the value in producing 5.1 original content that brings value to both the broadcaster and their audience. Coupled with our recent collaboration with Harris Corporation, Broadcast Communications Division, we are very enthusiastic that our expert systems for generating and managing 5.1 content will help develop the HD broadcast markets."

About CBS
CBS Television comprises the CBS Television Network -- with more than 200 owned and affiliated stations reaching virtually every television home in the United States; the Network's programming arms CBS Entertainment, CBS News and CBS Sports; and CBS Enterprises.

CBS is in the fourth year of presenting the majority of its primetime lineup in high definition. In June 2001, CBS became the first to broadcast HD during the daytime when it commenced daily weekday HD broadcasts of television's leading daytime drama "The Young and the Restless." CBS is also the leader in HD sports broadcasts, including its recent presentation of the AFC Playoffs. This is the fourth consecutive year CBS has presented the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four and Championship Games in HD. CBS has also presented The Masters Golf tournament in HDTV, and just concluded its second season of HD broadcasts of the SEC Game of the Week. CBS broadcasts, on average, 25 hours per week of High Definition programming, more than any other broadcast network, and produces more original HD programming per week than any other network -- either broadcast, cable or satellite. One hundred and thirty of CBS's owned-and-affiliated stations are currently broadcasting digitally, covering approximately 88 percent of the nation. In coming months, CBS expects to be transmitting digital programming across more than 100 owned and affiliated stations, reaching well over 83 percent of the country. For the Grammy's broadcast, CBS is planning to offer 5.1 surround sound to 25 of its major market stations. CBS is also planning to roll out 5.1 surround sound to all markets currently offering HDTV in the coming year.
